What is Shiatsu?

Shiatsu is a complementary therapy which originated in Japan and combines Oriental principals with Western science.

The philosophy is that energy called Ki is flowing around the entire body. However, Ki can become obstructed due to the challenges that are brought on by daily life. If the Ki cannot flow freely through its channels from head to toes, this may bring on emotional, psychological, physical and spiritual discomfort.

A shiatsu treatment stimulates the flow of energy by giving pressure to the body  with fingers, palms, elbows or knees, incorporating stretches and rotations. Pressure can open up tense or painful areas, regulate blood flow, calm the mind or support good functioning of the body systems.

The constant, downward, steady-paced pressure signals to your brain to quieten down. This helps get you into a "rest and restore" mode with your breath deepening and becoming more regular.

Shiatsu allows you to get to know yourself in a different way as your attention gradually shifts inward. Regular treatments will increase your self awareness and maximise your potential whilst at the same time respecting your boundaries.
